Until I was 50, tried to do it myself because wasn't admitting it was to hard was some kind of failure. Then it got too hard and I had no choice. Turning to (prescribed) drugs made it esier to get ahead of the depression. Then when I was more put together I had a lot more success in fighting it off. The final stage has been to minimize the drugs required for me NOT to start down the spiral. Life is so much nicer when the sun comes out more, people smile more, and my problems are not all life threatening :)
Now at 70 my life is more serene, not so many problems seem to come my way, an my relationship are more loving. (Why could I not understand sooner that I did not have to do it alone :)

Obviously he was in a state of very severe depression, near suicide. Not because he WANTED, but he could not care one way or the other. He could not take up the effort to keep his friends.
But his doctors should have seen that depression after his beating, and given medicines for depression, or prescribed exercise and sun - or even as a last resort shock therapy. Ok, the docs miss things.

Then he exiles himself away from people, but has a self started job? - incredibly hard for a person in severe depression to do. They not only have no emotion, but find activities hard to do - nothing seems to matter. And they often get physically exhausted from nothing, much less a job where he has to motivate himself - while he recovers from his injuries. This was very weak.
But then when his depression started to lift, he peacefully begins to feel emotion - there is no sudden rages, no bitterness - only good things. weak again.
so it is a well told, but poorly researched story.

I don’t think the depression, mood swings and anxiety (among other things) are the result of Bi-Polar, but symptoms of another condition, which can be explained by most of those drugs, Gary found at Jessie’s flat. “Serophone” is not something I’ve stumbled across, during my research, but I did come across a drug called Serophene - though, I doubt that Jessie was trying to conceive again! The Metformin was the one that really caught my eye. Typically, it’s used to treat Type 2 Diabetes, but it can also be prescribed to women with PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome - the symptoms of which are mood swings, depression and anxiety, among others - along with Folic Acid.
Of course, it’s probable that I’m wrong - but, I’m not going to peek at the “other place”, to see if I was right or not! I’m content to wait until Chapter 9 and find out, like everyone else :-)

I have ED and it nearly destroyed my marriage. My situation didn't play out like this story, but it did have a happy ending.
My doctor prescribed some medications for depression (which actually made my ED worse), but he also referred me to a counselor. My wife and I worked with the counselor for several months, and it ended up bringing us closer together. I just wish I'd gotten help sooner, because it would have saved a lot of pain.
